The Local History of Mitcham, South Australia

Located in the foothills of the Adelaide Hills, Mitcham is a suburb of Adelaide in South Australia. The area has a rich history dating back to pre-European settlement times and has undergone significant changes over the years.

Indigenous History

The Kaurna people are the traditional owners of the land where Mitcham now stands. They have lived in the region for tens of thousands of years and have a deep spiritual connection to the land. The area was an important source of food and water for the Kaurna people, and they used the local flora and fauna for medicinal purposes.

Early European Settlement

The first Europeans to settle in the Mitcham area were Samuel Stephens and Thomas Hudson Beare, who arrived in Adelaide in 1836. They established the South Australian Company, which was responsible for the colonization of South Australia. In 1838, they purchased land in the present-day suburb of Mitcham and established a farm.

Over the next few years, other settlers arrived in the area, and the population grew. In 1840, a school was established, and the first church was built in 1847.

Development and Growth

By the early 20th century, Mitcham had become a prosperous suburb with a thriving community. Many of the older buildings in the area date back to this period, including the Mitcham Council Chambers and the Mitcham Congregational Church.

The suburb continued to grow throughout the 20th century, and by the 1950s, it had become a popular location for housing. Many of the older buildings were demolished to make way for new homes, but some have been preserved as heritage sites.

Recent Developments

In more recent years, the Mitcham area has undergone significant changes. The Mitcham Square shopping centre was built in the 1970s and underwent a major renovation in the early 2000s. The centre now boasts over 70 shops and has become a hub for the local community.

In 2013, the Mitcham community was devastated by the Sampson Flat bushfires, which destroyed many homes and caused extensive damage to the local environment. The community rallied together, and many of the homes have since been rebuilt.

History of in Mitcham

The history of Mitcham is a story of resilience and a testament to the strength of the local community.
